Who We Are

Fine Art Investments, established in 1972 by Dennis R. Tesdell, (Originally “Antiques For Interiors”) is a professional business specializing in appraising, evaluating and brokering high quality fine art and antiques. Fine Art Investments specializes in brokering old authentic Tiffany Lamps and high quality American and European paintings by major well known artists. We also provide Professional Appraisal services within the state of Iowa.

Dennis R. Tesdell took years of formal education, majoring in art history, design and art. As a collector himself, he gained much knowledge from experts in various fields to further educate himself. He spent years traveling and visiting the best museums and galleries in the world, learning from renowned experts by hands on experience and mentoring. He often visited museums and fine galleries during and after hours, spending time learning from the curators and well seasoned gallery owners he had befriended, some of whom went on to be ANTIQUES ROADSHOW experts, or “specialists” working for major auction houses.

After operating an art and antique gallery for several years, he decided to do nothing but appraisal and brokerage work, since there were no qualified appraisers in his state with his knowledge and experience. He soon became well known for his knowledge and expertise in fine art and antiques. He developed a good working relationship with insurance companies, trust departments, attorneys, the IRS, corporations and private collectors needing appraisals in Iowa. He has been a member of several appraisal associations, and has been an Associate Member of the International Society of Appraisers, Inc. for almost 20 years. The 30 plus years Dennis has spent in this profession have earned him the friendship and respect of his fellow appraisers, museum curators and directors and collectors nationally.

From 1978-2000 Dennis Tesdell authored and contributed many articles on art and antiques and on the art and antique appraisal process. In 1999 he was a chief contributor to the first book published by DUMMIES on antique collecting, called Antiquing For Dummies. He is given special thanks and recognition in the author’s “acknowledgments” section. The other people working for and with Dennis Tesdell are all highly skilled and experienced professionals, each with certain duties and expert “specialty areas” in the fields of high quality fine art and antiques.

Appraisal & Liquidation Services

Formal, on-site (in-home) appraisals are only done within the State of Iowa. We provide this service for attorneys, executors, institutions and private collectors. We do not provide appraisals for single items. Due to time constraints, we only provide out of “Metro Des Moines” area appraisals services for collections of fairly significant size (75 or more individual items). We do not appraise coins, jewelry, stamps or furs. Nor do we provide appraisal services over the phone or via email.

When a formal appraisal is not needed, and the owner merely wants to sell or liquidate their collection, we are very experienced in helping you decide how best to quickly and effectively dispose of your items. If the collection consists of items which may be of interest to our extensive list of pre-screened buyers, we may suggest utilizing our professional Brokerage Services. For other items, we have often referred our clients to the same central Iowa auction house (who we know to be 100% honest, reliable, competent and very professional) for over 15 years. We will help you get in touch with the auction house owner to arrange for a personal inspection and evaluation of your items without the need for paying our firm for an appraisal.

The Appraisal Process A Few Easy Steps To Help Us Get Started

Call or email us with a description of your situation:

If it is an estate, unless the estate is settled or is not going through probate, we prefer to speak with the executor/executrix or the attorney for the estate.

If it is a collection, either private or an institution, we would want to speak with whoever is legally in charge of the art and antique items and who would have an inventory list and the best knowledge about the number and scope of the items needing evaluation.

If it is a personal collection, we always work with the legal owner(s) or someone we know is appointed by them to work with us on the appraisal if they cannot do it themselves.

We will need to know the following things to enable us to decide if we are the appropriate business to help you:
Where the items are located (city).

The purpose for the appraisal (insurance, estate, liquidation, divorce equitable division of assets, etc.)

The categories of art and antiques you have: This would be categories such as furniture, artwork, glassware items, silver and china, pottery and porcelain, collectibles, antique toys, dolls, quilts, tools, firearms, etc. (See our Inventory Worksheet for more information.)
After hearing the categories you have, we ask you to approximate the total number of items in each category, so we can get some feel for the amount of time our appraiser would be spending in-person doing the inspection. Sometimes going from room to room is a good way to make your list; we also offer this handy, easy to use, Inventory Worksheet to make the task simpler. You can take your time in doing this of course. If you already have a list or can do it fairly accurately in email or on the phone, that is fine also.

We explain all of our fees to you and how we charge for our services. If it is something you wish to pursue, we then proceed to schedule a date and time to begin the on site appraisal. Download Inventory Worksheet
Requires FREE Adobe® Reader® The Final Steps

Once we agree to work together, we will establish a date and time, depending on where the items are located and how much there is to inspect and evaluate, to perform the actual on-site inspection portion of our service.

Our appraiser will arrive on the appointed day and time and begin the appraisal. At no time do we take possession of any of your items.

Once the appraiser has finished the on-site inspection, they will bring all the written descriptive notes, 35mm photos and other materials back to our office. We will then begin the task of doing the market research in order to accurately arrive upon a fair price each item. This research and pricing process can take from a few days, to two or three weeks, depending on the size of the appraisal and our current workload.

After pricing for your items has been completed, the information is given to our typist, who will prepare the professional appraisal report forms. Turn-around time for this phase of the process depends on the number and size of completed appraisals waiting to be typed, and can take from three to eight weeks. We will be happy to give you an estimate on the turn-around time for your appraisal, once we see how much you have to appraise and once we know your appraisal date.

Your completed typewritten report, with 2-3 additional copies, along with any photos the appraiser took, will be mailed back to you. In most cases, the photos will be numbered on the back to correspond to the number of the item on the appraisal report. This helps greatly in identifying which item is which, especially if the person who ordered the appraisal is not knowledgeable about antiques and art.

That is how we work and have worked for over thirty years. With almost twenty years of membership with the International Society of Appraisers, Inc., we have the skill and ability to provide you with an accurate and professional quality appraisal to suit your individual needs.
FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION OR INQUIRIES
REGARDING OUR APPRAISAL SERVICES

Please leave a message or send an email if we happen to miss your call. We return all emails and phone calls promptly within the hours stated above.

Please Note: No Appraisals Are Ever Given By Phone. Once we know the scope and number of items you have to appraise we can usually provide you with a fairly accurate estimate of the time that will be needed on site for the inspection and evaluation.
